Week 2 - Science Tools
Learn about some common science tools and discuss scientific investigations. Students will also learn that it is important to describe things accurately and to compare observations with others.
Week 3 - Safety
Learn about the importance of safety in the science lab. Students will discuss some safety equipment and learn some basic rules for staying safe when doing investigations and making observations.
Week 4 - Earth
Identify rocks, soil and water as the basic materials that make up Earth. Students will learn that rocks and other things on Earth come in many different sizes. Students will also learn that people and animals can change their environments.
Week 5 - Water
Students will be introduced to the Earth's waterways-oceans, rivers, lakes and ponds, etc. Students will learn about some of the plants and animals that live in water habitats.
Week 6 - Weather
Explore the types of weather that happen on Earth. Students will compare weather patterns from season to season and learn about how seasons affect plants and animals. Students will also learn about safety procedures to follow during severe weather conditions.

Week 7 - Space
Learn about day and night and the objects we can see in the sky at different times. Students will also learn that we need a telescope to see some things in space. Students will expand their knowledge that the way the moon looks follows a pattern.
Week 8 - The Sun
Learn that the sun provides light and heat for the Earth. Students will explore how the rotation of the Earth is responsible for sunrise and sunset. Students will learn how the sun causes shadows on the Earth.
Week 9 - Living Things
Distinguish between living and nonliving things. Students will understand the basic needs of all living things-food, water, air and space. Students expand their knowledge that living things are alike in some ways and different in others.
Week 10 - Plants
Understand that many different kinds of plants live in different environments on Earth. Students will identify the parts of plants-roots, stem, leaves and flowers-and learn about the functions of each part.
Week 11 - Animals
Learn about different systems that help animals get what they need to survive. Students will also learn that animals use plants and other animals for food. Students will recognize similarities and differences in animals and their parents.
Week 12 - People
Students will understand that people have different systems that perform different functions-movement, digestion, respiration, etc. and will recognize the parts of the body that are associated with some of those systems. Students will recognize that there are similarities and differences between children and their parents.

Week 13 - We Grow
Learn that living things need energy to grow and that they change as they grow. Students will also learn that living things produce offspring.

Week 16 - Homes
Learn about different habitats on Earth that plants and animals call home. Students will understand that some kinds of plants and animals that once lived on Earth are no longer alive but are similar to some living things that are.
Week 17 - Sharing the Earth
Understand that people need to use resources carefully, so that they don't run out. Students will also learn that some living things are in danger of becoming extinct and need to be protected.
Week 18 - Matter
Explore the idea that objects can be described by the materials they are made of and that many things are made of smaller parts. Students will learn that materials can exist in different states and understand the difference between solids and liquids.

Week 19 - Matter Changes
Learn that people can change some properties of matter by doing something to them, e.g., cutting, heating, freezing, etc. Students will also learn that materials respond in different ways when people try to change them. Students will be able to describe changes in size, shape, color, etc. and note what properties stay the same.
Week 20 - Energy
Explore how matter and energy interact. Students will learn that heat can be produced in different ways and that all living things need energy that comes from food. Students will also learn that light passes through some objects but not others.
Week 21 - Move It
Discuss how things move-in a straight line, back and forth, fast, slowly, etc. Students will learn that pushing or pulling can change how things are moving.
Week 22 - Forces
Continue to explore the relationship of force and motion. Students will learn about natural forces like gravity and magnets.
Week 23 - Models and Systems
