Week 1 - Welcome to Science
This issue introduces students to Science Studies Weekly. Students will learn that everyone can do science and that working with others can be helpful. Students will understand that scientists can learn by observing and by doing.
Week 2 - The World of Science
Learn about common science tools. Learn that it is important to describe things accurately as students talk to each other about their observations.
Week 3 - Safety
Learn about the importance of safety in the science lab. Students will discuss some safety equipment and learn some basic rules for staying safe when doing investigations and making observations.
Week 4 - Earth
Identify rocks, soil and water as the basic materials that make up Earth. Students will learn that rocks and other things on Earth come in many different sizes.
Week 5 - Water
An introduction to Earth's waterways-oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds, etc. Students will learn about the importance of water to all life on Earth.
Week 6 - Weather
Explore the types of weather that happen on Earth and talk about seasons. Students will also learn about safety procedures to follow during severe weather conditions.

Week 7 - Day and Night
Learn about day and night and the objects we can see in the sky at different times. Students will begin to understand that there is a pattern to the way the moon looks.
Week 8 - The Sun
Learn that the sun provides light and heat for the Earth. Students will understand that the sun can only be seen during the day and will discuss sunrise and sunset.
Week 9 - Life
Distinguish between living and nonliving things. Students will understand the basic needs of all living things-food, water, air and space to live in. Students will also learn that living things are alike in some ways and different in others.
Week 10 - Plants
Understand that many different kinds of plants live in different environments on Earth. Students will recognize similarities and differences in plants and group plants according to features such as size, color, etc.
Week 11 - Animals
Understand that many different kinds of animals live in different environments on Earth. Students will recognize similarities and differences in animals and group animals according to features such as size, color, etc.
Week 12 - People
Learn about our five senses. Students will recognize basic parts of the body and understand that the parts work together to help us live. Students will also learn that people are alike in some ways and different in some ways.

Week 13 - We Grow
Learn that living things change as they grow. Students will explore the ways different plants and animals grow and will compare the sizes of various living things.
Week 14 - Be Healthy
Learn that exercise and healthy food are important for all people. Students will discuss how people like doctors and nurses help us when we are sick.
Week 15 - Families
Learn that children are very similar to their parents but not exactly like them. Students will understand that plants and animals depend on each other to survive.
Week 16 - Homes
Learn that many different kinds of plants and animals live in many different places. Students will learn about some of Earth's habitats and the plants and animals that live there.
Week 17 - Share the Earth
Understand that people need to use resources carefully, so that they don't run out. Students will learn that some animals are extinct. Students will also learn that some living things are in danger of becoming extinct and need to be protected.
Week 18 - Matter
Learn that objects can be described according to the materials they are made of and that many things are made of smaller parts. Students will learn that materials can exist in different states.

Week 19 - Matter Changes
Learn that people can change some properties of matter by doing something to them, e.g., cutting, heating, freezing, etc. Students will also learn that different materials respond in different ways when people try to change them.
Week 20 - Energy
Explore how matter and energy interact. Students will learn that heat can be produced in different ways and that all living things need energy that comes from food.
Week 21 - Move It
Discuss how things move-in a straight line, back and forth, fast, slowly, etc. Students will learn that pushing or pulling can change how things are moving.
Week 22 - Magnets and Gravity
Continue to explore the relationship of force and motion. Students will learn about natural forces like gravity and magnets.
Week 23 - Models
Learn that a model is like the real thing in some ways and different in others. Students will see how models can help us learn. Students will understand that we can describe things by telling how it is like something else.
Week 24 - Spending and Saving Money
Explore ways that technology can help make people's lives better. Students will learn about tools that help us do work and understand that people cannot always make every tool they think of.
