…Mr. Ravens continued to pat her shoulder.
“We’ve decided to bring the most isolated families under our protection, so that no women and children are left far from help. Other large planters along the frontier will be doing the same. We men will take turns planting. We’ll move from farm to farm and take turns standing guard until everyone’s crops are in the ground.
“The first families may arrive tomorrow, living in tents until the emergency is over.”
Elizabeth had started to doze off, but now she straightened up, wide awake. “Other children will be coming here to live?”
Her father smiled. “Yes, Elizabeth. I think you can count on at least half a dozen children living among us for the next several weeks.
“What about the wedding, James?” Mrs. Ravens asked.
“That will take place in three weeks, as planned,” he replied, smiling at Sarah. “One last thing---I must insist that we take sensible precautions. Don’t go to the spring or the orchard or anywhere outside the fence unless someone goes with you. Above all, you must not go into the forest …”
It’s wedding season at Ravenswood, the plantation owned by Elizabeth’s family. The family servant, Sarah, is preparing to marry, leaving Elizabeth without a best friend. And just when Elizabeth thinks she’s got plenty to worry about, more trouble strikes: local settlers destroy a Susquehannock village. Now, the Susquehannock want revenge, and Ravenswood opens its doors to frontier families for protection. But when Elizabeth’s father refuses to lead an army against the natives without the permission of Virginia’s government, Elizabeth begins to wonder just how safe her family is. Why can’t her father be more like Nathaniel Bacon, the exciting, young plantation owner who seems unafraid to take matters into his own hands? And why---when she writes her name to show Mr. Bacon how intelligent she is---does she feel like she’s made a terrible mistake?
