How to Make a Holiday Ribbon Tree Ornament

Dec. 9, 2022 • by Debbie Bagley

With the holidays upon us, if you’re like me, you’re always searching for a fun, easy, affordable, and cute craft that kids can do that can also double as a gift. Holiday Ribbon Trees are a huge hit with crafters of all ages because they are perfectly imperfect and turn out so darling!!!

Here is what you will need:

    • Sticks about 6 inches long
(Some people use cinnamon sticks but I just gathered some from my bushes that we had just trimmed)
    • Various ribbons
(I purchased mine from the dollar store)
    • Scissors
    • String or yarn
    • Hot glue gun
    • Buttons or stars for the tops

Here is what you’ll do:

  1. After gathering all the supplies, cut the ribbons into 6-inch strips.
  2. Invite everyone to choose a stick and start tying the ribbons on the stick. A simple one loop tie is perfect. I’ve found it helpful to leave some of the stick uncovered at the bottom for the trunk and leave some stick open at the top to glue on the string and button.
  3. Tie the ribbons close together on the stick. It is ok if they slightly overlap. You will be able to tug and work them into place at the end.
  4. You do not need to worry about making sure your lengths get smaller towards the top. After all the ribbons are tied on, use scissors to trim and shape into a triangle tree shape.
  5. Tie a loop of string at the top of the tree. Secure with hot glue.
  6. Hot glue a button or star at the top if you wish.

Voila! Your tree is complete!!

In addition to being delightful to make, this Ribbon Tree craft helps kids practice their fine motor skills and making patterns in the process. These truly turn out lovely and the kids are usually excited to make more and give them as gifts!

To add to the joy, I like to play festive holiday music while we’re working together on these. I often also read them holiday stories about loving and serving others and teach them songs about giving meaningful gifts from the heart.

Happiest Holidays my friends! I wish you continued health, peace, and JOY!
